Chikka has a new look. And feel.
Chikka's Text Messenger is an instant messaging (IM) client application that lets users send free PC-to-mobile text messages. It had only been previously available via a Windows installer, but has now been ported over to the Web, and is now called X-Messenger (presumably short for cross-messenger or cross-platform messenger).
Aside from the facelift for Web browsers, Chikka Text Messenger also has a new personality. Here are the X-factors:
- You can now log into all your IM accounts--Yahoo, MSN, GoogleTalk, AIM, ICQ, and of course your Chikka account too.
- You can now send text messages to your friends around the world.
The advantages:
- A browser-accessible version means no more downloads (although if you prefer the downloadable version, it's still available);
- You can now log onto Chikka and your other IMs wherever you have Web access;
- If you sit behind corporate firewalls, where access to popular
IM services is restricted, you now have access to Chikka and your other
IMs;
- Mac and Linux users can now use Chikka too.
I know what you're thinking. No big deal. meebo can do the same. Fair enough. But here's the diff: meebo does not allow you to send text messages to your buddies' mobile phones. And if you log out of meebo, well, you're offline. With X-Messenger, you can choose to have your buddies' IM messages forwarded to your mobile phone. So when you go offline (lose connection or log out), you can still get IM messages on the go, via text.
That said, Chikka's "classic" features remain--you can still send free text messages from your PC to your friends in these countries:
- Philippines
- USA
- UK
- Spain
- Japan
- India
- Indonesia (XL)
- Thailand (DTAC)
- Hong Kong (1528)
- Guam
- Saipan
You can also now send PC-to-mobile text messages to your friends in countries not on the above list, but those won't be free. And you'll need a Paypal account to do so. It's like SkypeOut's SMS service, but cheaper.
To associate your Paypal account to Chikka's wallet (also new), click on the Wallet Login link, as shown below.
To send a paid text message to far-flung friends, add them as buddies first. Click Add Buddy on the lower left corner of the buddy list panel; select Chikka as IM Network, then specify your friend's mobile phone for the Chikka ID, including the country code, but excluding the international prefix ("+", or "00"). So for Singapore, for example, type 65######## in the Chikka ID field.

Happy texting!
Disclaimer: I am involved with several mobile VAS providers, Chikka being one of them. That said, this is not Chikka's corporate blog. Feel free to post comments, but I am not Chikka's help desk. ;)
